Nowadays, so many people are suffering from anxiety. They try different techniques to feel some relief. Some help temporarily. Others do not.

If you wish to truly be free from the devastating effects, the first step is awareness.

Anxiety starts with a concern. When you begin to think about what you are concerned about, you then begin to worry. After some time, the worry turns into anxiety. As you focus on the anxiety and accompanying physical symptoms, they increase and often can lead to a panic attack.

You can take back control. You can take back control of your mind and your body. You can take back control of your life.

Now that you have this new awareness, you can choose your thoughts. You can choose to focus on what you are concerned about rather than begin to worry. If you don't worry about it, you won't feel anxious or have a panic attack.

You can take back control by first asking yourself if the concern is rational or not.  If it is not, you can move to the final step outlined below. If it is than the next step to taking back control of your life is by recognizing what you are concerned about and then by taking action...doing everything possible to prevent what you are about from transpiring.

Simply by having your thoughts focused on what you can actually do and then by taking the action identified will provid you with a greater sense of control.

By taking action, you will often address the concern and will make the likelihood that what you are afraid of will not take place.

After you have done all that you can, the final step is to let go. This is often the most difficult part for most people. Worrying and anxiety are wasted emotions. They might make you feel like you are doing something when you actually are not. They actually tap into your sense of powerlessness.

By taking all the action possible, you take back your power. You can then work on letting o knowing that you done all that you can . This is an important and final step.

To let go , say to yourself

I have done all that I can do.

It is now out of my hands.

I am not going to waste my precious energy by worrying...when it won't do any good anyways.

I have done all that I can do(and remind yourself of what you have done).

If you have a belief in God or something force greater than yourself, you can say: I give it over to you.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life. You have the ability to Change Your Thoughts. Shift Your Feelings. Create Your Dreams.

Are You Spiritual? What Is That Really?

September 15, 2016 Bonnie Barness

I was talking with a friend today on the phone and in the course of our conversation, I said to her, "You are very spiritual". She was silent for a moment and then responded, "Am I? What is that really?"

It was a good question.

During a coaching session some months ago, I asked a client, "Are you spiritual?" and he answered, "I'm not religious".

Does being "spiritual" mean being "religious"?

Nowadays, it seems that everyone is talking about "being spiritual" yet many people don't quite know what that is.

Growing up, we are taught how to walk and talk, read and write, achieve in life and deal with the practical realities of daily living. We identify with our physical body and the world that we can perceive with our five senses.

At some point in time, most people begin to wonder if there is more to life.

Many begin searching. Searching for meaning. Searching for purpose. Searching for fulfillment.

Some find it. Some do not.

This was my journey. One that started very early on in life. What I discovered has allowed me to live with a deep sense of meaning and purpose.

I came to realize that there are three different levels to spirituality: Being Spiritual, Living Spiritually and Connecting Spiritually.

Being Spiritual is recognizing that your authentic, true self, your essence, your soul is non-physical.

I came to understand that Living Spiritually is to actualize your true self in the world, through your words, actions and choices.

I now know that to Connecting Spiritually is to first become aware of something non-physical, a force, the universe, God, that exists and is involved in your life. And then to connect and be in partnership with that "something greater than yourself" to create a better, more peaceful world.

Most religions began with an individual person who had a profound and unique experience, Connecting Spiritually.  The experience allowed him or her to recognize and embrace Being Spiritual and provided knowledge on how to actualize a vision of humanity that is filled with love, joy and peace. A vehicle, religion with it's traditions and institutions, was formed  to unveil and pass on this experience and knowledge  to large numbers of people. Being Religious is actively being involve in these traditions and usually the institutions as well.

Presently, many people throughout the world, are finding their own path, creating their own unique vehicle, to Being Spiritual, Living Spiritually and Connecting Spiritually.

Many of us  have had our own profound and unique experiences that have made us aware that there is more to life than "meets the eye", allowing us to Connect Spiritually. We, too, can recognize and embrace our authentic, true self- Being Spiritual- while utilizing our knowledge and wisdom to create a life filled with love, joy, and peace for ourselves and all those around us Living Spiritually.

Oh. So to return to my story. On the phone with my friend, I didn't actually say all of this in response to her question but I summed it up in a few sentences. As I took a breath, she interjected, "I guess I am spiritual after all and didn't even realize it!"

You, too are on your own personal journey of life. Now is your moment in time to take the first steps onto your new path, where you will begin to connect more and more with your True, Authentic Self. Your Passion. Your Purpose. A shift will begin to occur and with it a new perspective about the life you have led and the one that awaits you.

Are you ready to Experience the Shift?
